(263 words) N.S. Leskov is a mysterious author. He writes works similar to funny and at the same time sad tales. Readers can only guess how the writer actually evaluates the hero. All these features can be seen in the work "Lefty."
The main character is a man who is outwardly unremarkable. Only on the cheek he has a birthmark, and his hair is torn out on his temples. The southpaw is not strong in science, but he has golden hands. Artisan has no equal. He can even shoe a flea: in the work such a case is described. The southpaw, whose fame is booming around the world, is in England. There they offer him wealth, honor and glory. And yet he chooses his homeland.
We do not know the name of Lefty. This is no coincidence: the author emphasizes that any other person could have appeared in the place of this hero. Leskov speaks about the talent of Russian people, but does not idealize folk artists: they do not always have technical knowledge, they drink a lot. But such people are gifted creatively. Moreover, they are strong in spirit. After all, Lefty was not afraid to go to the sovereign to prove his innocence! He does his work disinterestedly; you cannot bribe him. The main thing for him is the Motherland. The hero is proud of his country and people - savvy craftsmen. Even in the face of death, he remembers his duty: to disclose the military secrets of England, without which the Russian army would be incapable. Left-hander believes in God. However, he feels “petty” compared to officials and does not assert his rights.
We can conclude that the author pities the hero and, accordingly, the Russian people. Talented people do not receive education, cannot count on the support of the authorities. Nevertheless, they are doing their job clearly and correctly, not expecting gratitude from anyone. Otherwise it can not be.
