(287 words) Bunin's story “Lapti” is about human kindness, participation, which is so lacking in the modern world. Despite the fact that the story was written almost a century ago, the theme of kindness and mercy raised by the writer is more relevant than ever in our time.
Nefedushka is a noble servant. And, contrary to his "low" position, he not only does not complain about life, does not keep evil at his masters, but also tries to help them in excess of work. It would be all the same to another servant whether the master’s son was sick, whether he would survive. But Nefed is not like that. He sympathetically and carefully asks about the condition of the child, because he sincerely worries about the owner's family. Having learned about the request of the sick baby to give him red bast shoes, Nefedushka, not thinking about herself, resolutely goes to the far walking road through a terrible blizzard. Because for him there is nothing more valuable than a barely begun life. And there is nothing worse than the ridiculous hasty childhood death. It is not known whether the coveted red bast shoes will help the boy survive and recover. But Nefed does not think, does not guess, because he sees the only chance of saving the child in the fulfillment of his desire. But even if red bast shoes - this is the last will of the boy, it must be fulfilled without fail. Nefed takes out bast shoes and fuchsin to paint them, and dies on the way back. However, thanks to his sacrifice, housewarming men are being saved. They bring the body of the servant, along with the bast shoes and red fuchsin laid behind the bosom, to the manor house. This means that kindness and an act of mercy are never in vain.
The serfs were "second-rate" people, no one considered their rights. But the generous servant Nefedushka shows an example of true mercy and unconditional kindness - truly human qualities that are independent of social status and living conditions. I believe that if people treated each other as carefully as Nefed treated a sick child, this would have healed our society from many vices.
