There are no more names, now each citizen is assigned an individual number. Feelings and emotions are no more, they were eradicated as unnecessary. All citizens live according to a single schedule: at the same time they go to bed and wake up, go to work and finish work shifts. Violation of the schedule threatens with immediate punishment.
It is here that the hero of the novel lives - the engineer D-503, who daily keeps diary entries. He admires his state and is devoted to him. He is working on the construction of Integral - a spacecraft, a strategically important facility of the State.
Once on a walk with his girlfriend 0-90, he meets a strange woman. Through her conversations, and indeed the appearance as a whole, she brings chaos to his thoughts. The stranger wears the number I-330.
A few days later I-330 invites D-503 to the Ancient House - Museum. In this place, things from the old time are stored, for example, Pushkin’s bust and piano. All this impresses the hero and his girlfriend. I-330 asks D-503 to stay with her in the house and violate the accepted routine. The hero is frightened of such an offer and leaves home with the intention of reporting to the girl at the Guardian Bureau. But he already feels irreversible changes in himself and instead goes to the Medical Bureau, where he is given a sick leave.
After some time, the D-503 again receives a notification that I-330 wants to meet with him. The hero, without thinking twice, goes to meet her, because she already became indifferent to him. He can no longer think of her. At the meeting, I-330 smokes, drinks, teases him. This is prohibited in the Unified State, but the D-503 does not report on it because of the feelings that arose in his soul.
After this meeting, D-503 is everywhere looking for his beloved. Out of hopelessness, he goes to the house-museum, where their first meeting was. There he meets his friend doctor number R-013. He shows him a secret door in the closet, through which they fall into a completely different world. There are no usual strict rules, people experience emotions and know what emotions are. They are sad, happy, afraid, love. Here, in this world, he meets I-330.
The old girlfriend of the hero 0-90 understands that he fell in love with another woman, and comes to say goodbye to him. In parting, she asks to make her a child. If the State finds out about such a violation, both will face severe punishment in the form of execution, but D-503 agrees to her request, and then takes her to that very world behind the door of the museum house.
At this time, Unanimity Day begins in the One State. On this day, all the inhabitants gather in the central square, a metal voice slowly says: “Who is for? ", And all citizens should raise their hands. But this time everything is going differently, and among the many hands “for”, “against” hands are raised. D-503 and I-330 are on different sides. D-503, like many others, is forcibly subjected to an operation to remove fantasy. After that, he feels great relief, all dangerous feelings and thoughts disappear. He brings to the Benefactor all that he knows about the conspirators. They are all sentenced to death.
