Asya's work, written by Turgenev and published in the first Sovremennik, is truly considered one of the most dramatic works of love. It raises topics such as the "extra" person, family, nostalgia, as well as issues such as the problem of moral choice, feelings and duty. In order to successfully operate with these arguments, the Literaguru team prepared a brief retelling.
- N.N., the protagonist of the work, already not at a young age, recalls a story that happened at the age of twenty-five years, when he traveled "without any purpose."
- Once having visited a business meeting (a solemn feast that students of the same land meet on - ed.), N.N. met a young man in a cap who turned out to be a Russian artist named Gagin, and his sister named Anna, who he simply called Asya. A new acquaintance invited N.N to his apartment. Asya was wild with N.N., but later “she was already talking.”
- The next morning, a new acquaintance woke N.N with a knock on the door, and they went into the garden, where Gagin showed his drawings. Hearing criticism, he explained this all to "Slavic licentiousness."
- The friends decided to find Asya - she was in the ruins, asked the old woman for water to water. Gagin said that she should not be teased, she could "climb the tower."
- NN talked for a long time about Russia, and when he saw Asya, she seemed to him "a completely Russian girl." Gagin wanted to draw, but the day did not work out, so they returned and found Asya the same as they had left - calm.
- For two weeks N.N. was visiting the Gagins, but Asya seemed to be trying not to intersect with N.N., who was increasingly convinced that she was not Gagin's sister. Once he heard a conversation at the gate in which Asya swore love to her "brother." N. N. was very bitter at heart.
- The next days N.N. spent in the mountains, not wanting to see Gagin, but at home he found a note inviting them to his apartment.
- At the meeting, Gagin met N.N in a friendly manner and told the story of their life: he was born in the village, his mother died early, his father was engaged in it. One day his uncle took him with him to the city, and the boy entered the guards regiment. About twenty years old he met a girl in the village who was about ten years old. Father said it was an orphan and he took care of her. When Gagin left, he received a “short letter” every month, but one day he received news of his father’s fatal illness. He found his father barely alive, and his father bequeathed to him the care of Asya. Gagin learned from the servant that Asya was the daughter of her father and maid Tatyana. At first the girl was shy of her origin, but when she saw that he recognized her “as a sister”, she became attached to him. When they returned to St. Petersburg, Asya entered one of the best guest houses. She was an excellent student, but she did not make friends with herself. And now they are traveling. After Gagin’s story, N.N. “felt a sweetness in his heart”.
- N.N. met Asya and invited him for a walk through the vineyard. There they talked for a long time about everything: about the tale of Lorelei, about the trace in life, about what N.N. liked about women. When they returned to the house, Asya asked her brother to play a waltz to dance with N.N.
- NN and Asya had fun all day like children. Returning home, he asked to let the boat go with the flow - in N. N. a thirst for happiness was lit.
- The next day, Asa became ill - she was awfully sleeping, all night thinking whether N.N was bored with her. He answered in the negative, to which her hand gripped him tightly.
- All evening Asya was sad, thought about her death. Gagin suggested once again playing the Waltz, which she refused.
- The next day, N.N was thinking about love for Asa. He could not do anything, he was only thinking all the time. The boy handed a note from the maid of honor to Annette, who asked to meet her near the stone chapel.
- Suddenly Gagin entered the room and stated that Asya was in love with N.N. and wanted to leave the city, he understood that N.N. would not marry Asa, so he asked to be honest with her.
- N.N received a new note from the boy - to meet Louise’s phrase in the house. He thought a lot about love, but in the end decided that he would not tell Asa about his feelings.
- Asya sat like a “frightened bird” and trembled. When N.n hugged her, Asya whispered “yours”, but he exclaimed that Gagin knew everything and accused Asya that she had betrayed her secret and thus “did not allow the development of feelings”. Asya jumped to the door and disappeared.
- N.n began to rebuke himself, because in the back room he had the strength to push her away from him. Remembering the whisper of “yours,” he felt a burning sensation in his chest.
- Having met with Gagin, he found out that Asya had not returned home - they decided to separately go look for her.
- N.N ran around the whole city, broke his arms, called for Asya, shouted for love for her. Not finding her, he returned to Gagin.
- Going to their house, he saw the light in Asya's room. Happy N.N was determined to talk with her, but Gagin only said "at another time." Until tomorrow - “tomorrow I will be happy! Happiness does not have tomorrow; it does not have yesterday; it does not remember the past, does not think about the future, it has a present - and that is not the day, but the moment. ”
- The next day N.N. did not find them - only the maid handed over a note where Gagin wrote about the need for separation. Near the house of Frau Louise, he received another, already from Asya, where the girl said that one word and she would have stayed. But now they are on their way to Cologne.
- In Cologne, N.N. tried to find the Gagins, but all the searches were in vain. He tried to console himself that he would not be happy with her, that he was too young. N. saw many women, but only Asya was able to awaken in him the strongest feeling. He still keeps her notes and dried flower of geranium.
