The text of the comedy was preserved only fragmentarily, but philologists reconstructed it.
The action takes place on the street of Corinth. There are two houses on the stage. One belongs to the commander of the mercenaries, the chiliarch Polemon, the second to the parents of the young man Moskhion.
The Goddess Ignorance tells a traditional (familiar to us from the “Arbitration Court”) plot, but constructed in a different way.
During childbirth, the wife of Athenian merchant Pateka dies. This sad event coincides with another: the ship Pateka with goods dies at sea, the merchant is completely ruined. And in order not to raise children in poverty, Patek decides to throw them to someone. Abandoned twins, a boy and a girl, are found by a poor old woman. It’s so hard for her, the years take their toll, and even there is an endless war in Corinth ...
The old woman gives the boy Moskhion to the rich Athenian Mirinna, who has long dreamed of her son, and leaves the girl to Gliker. Moskhion is brought up in the house of the rich Mirinna, without knowing anything about refusal, while Glycker grows modest and diligent. But the half-miserable existence forces the adoptive mother to give the beautiful pupil to Polemon. Corinthian warlord is crazy about a beautiful lover.
Before dying, the old woman tells Glicker that she has a brother who lives nearby. Moskhion, unaware of this, begins to care for Glyker. In the absence of Polemon, he seeks closeness with her and kisses her. Gliker, thinking that his brother knows everything, does not resist kisses. But suddenly Polemon returns home and, in anger, cuts off the glycara's scythe with a sword (hence the name of the comedy).
After this, Polemon, enraged by the “treason” of Glyckers, accompanied by the squire Sosia, leaves for the village. And offended by baseless suspicions, Glycker asks neighbor Mirinna to shelter her. The inconsiderate, but extremely curious Dove, a slave of Moskhion, decides that his mother did this in the interests of a dumb son. Yes, and the arrogant young man, who continually boasts of his successes with heterosexuals, is confident in his irresistibility ...
Polemon, angry and yearning in the solitude of the village, sends home a reconnaissance squire. But the slow and sleepy Sosia does not report any news. Sent a second time, he still discovers that a change has occurred in his master’s house.
A tipsy Polemon with his warriors is about to storm Mirinna’s house, where Glycker took refuge. But Patek, who appears on the stage (the father of Glycker and Moskhion and, by chance, an old friend of Polemon) convinces the raging commander to stall. For it will be against the law. After all, not being married to Gliker, he has no right to dictate his will to her: “... the thing is crazy / You started a business. Where are you rushing? / For whom? Why, she’s her own head! ”
Polemon tells Patek how well Glicker lived with him, shows her rich outfits. And he gave all this to his beloved!
Meanwhile, the unsuspecting Moskhion expects Glycker to throw herself into his arms. And Patek, fulfilling Polemon’s request, is sent by the parliamentarian to Mirinna’s house. Just at that time, at the request of Glycker, the slave maid Dorida brings a box with the things of the girl from the house of Polemon. Yes, with the very things that were found with thrown babies!
When she thoughtfully searches through the jewels, Patek, who is present right there, finds out the things of the deceased wife. He tells Glicker how her mother died, how he went broke and decided to get rid of the children. The girl confirms that she has a brother, and calls his name.
Moskhion, who had quietly crept in at that time, hears everything and at the same time experiences disappointment and joy at the same time - after all, he has found a sister, who, of course, cannot be his mistress ...
Polemon, who finds no place for himself from excitement, is impatiently waiting for news. The maid of Dorida assures him: everything will end well. But Polemon does not believe that his beloved will forgive him, and he hurries to the Mirinna’s house. Patek and Glicker come out to meet him. An old friend solemnly announces: he agrees that Polemon should marry his daughter. In the dowry behind her, he gives three talents. Polemon is happy and asks to forgive him thoughtless insults and other sins of jealousy.
Moskhion is both happy and upset. But the father reports that he also found a good bride. So, to everyone's joy, the comedy ends.
